542,800. Jigs for boats. SIMPSON, C. E. April 23, 1940, No. 7286. [Class 113 (i)] For the construction, in an inverted position, of the hulls of wood and/or metal boats of round bilge form from prefabricated parts, a wood or metal jig, which forms no part of the hull structure and which is shaped from a previously prepared full-size geometrical lay-out of the hull, comprises longitudinal and transverse formers A, B and longitudinal battens H which connect all the formers and which lie midway between the positions J of the plank laps and also along the sheer line. These battens are set in from the outer surface of the transverse formers A by a distance equal to the thickness of the transverse ribs K of the boat hull. The positions of the transverse ribs K are marked on the battens H, and the positions C of the planking or plating and the positions D of the stringers are marked on the formers A, B. The latter are removably secured by screws or bolts to a rigid wood or metal foundation F which may be mounted on wheels G or secured to the floor. Cleats Y and a wrapper guide X are secured to the forward, or to the forward and aft, edges of the longitudinal formers B. The battens H are secured to the formers A, B as by means of clips, bolts, or screws E. To the complete jig thus formed is secured the centre line main framing of the hull which is pre-fabricated into a single unit comprising the heel L, stem M, apron O, fore deadwood P, hog Q, aft longitudinal member R, sternport N, and transom frame S. The previously prepared transverse ribs K are all passed under this inverted centre line main framing and are engaged with the outer surfaces of the battens H to which they are temporarily secured by cramps, clips, or tack nails T. The latter are removed as the planking or plating is secured to the ribs K, and finally the gunwales and other outside fittings are secured in position. The hull is then removed from the jig, placed upright in a cradle, and the interior fitting proceeded with. |
