The corrosion of metal surfaces is inhibited through the use of a corrosion inhibit. The inhibitor comprises at least one quaternary nitrogen containing heterocycle that can be joined to at least one aromatic system in combination with an anion with an atomic number greater than 52 (such as Iodine). These groups can be connected via a linking group which may be covalently attached to the quaternary nitrogen atoms of the aromatic heterocyclic rings, and a polarizable adsorption-intensifying anion. The concentration of the anions is at least that of the quaternary nitrogen atoms in equivalent terms. The nitrogen containing heterocyclic group may be pyridine, quinoline, isoquinoline, anthradine or phenanthradine. The linking group may also comprise a plurality of carbon atoms. An example inhibitor would be hexanediyl di-isoquinolinium iodide |
