PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine capable of detecting a deposit with high accuracy, and suppressing abnormal combustion resulting from the deposit.SOLUTION: An internal combustion engine 100 includes: an antenna 30 configured to transmit/receive high-frequency electromagnetic waves to/from a combustion chamber 22; a microwave generator 32 configured to supply high-frequency electromagnetic waves transmitted from the antenna 30; and a microwave detector 34 configured to detect high-frequency electromagnetic waves reflected in the combustion chamber 22. The internal combustion engine causes the combustion chamber 22 to function as a cavity resonator, and detects a deposit in the combustion chamber 22 on the basis of the resonance state of high-frequency electromagnetic waves detected by the microwave detector 34.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
