PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device for an engine that can appropriately execute a deterioration diagnosis of an exhaust emission control catalyst and can early activate a sensor heater at restart of the engine while suppressing electric power consumed by the sensor heater.SOLUTION: A control device for an engine includes: a catalyst deterioration diagnosis section 103 for diagnosing a deterioration state of an exhaust emission control catalyst 42 on the condition that the exhaust emission control catalyst 42 is activated; a heater control section 104 for controlling an operation of a sensor heater 47 on the basis of a temperature of the exhaust emission control catalyst 42. When the temperature of the exhaust emission control catalyst 42 becomes a first temperature or lower, the catalyst deterioration diagnosis section 103 stops the diagnosis of the deterioration state of the exhaust emission control catalyst 42. When the temperature of the exhaust emission control catalyst 42 is equal to or lower than a second temperature that is lower than the first temperature by a predetermine temperature, the heater control section 104 stops the operation of the sensor heater 47.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 3
