A data transfer connection (301) between a device (101, 105) and another device (102) can be established using a basic protocol having a multipath extension that allows for the data transfer connection to use several different paths (304, 305) in parallel. In establishing the data transfer connection (301), an intermediate device (103) receives a connection request from the device (101, 105). This connection request comprises an indication that the device (101, 105) is capable of handling the multipath extension. In addition, the connection request comprises an identification (113) of the other device (102) with which the data transfer connection is to be established. The intermediate device (103) then determines whether the other device (102) is capable of handling the multipath extension, or not. The intermediate device (103) establishes the data transfer connection (301) in accordance with the multipath extension if the other device (102) is capable of handling the multipath extension. Otherwise, the intermediate device (103) establishes the data transfer connection as a concatenation of the following two data transfer connection portions. Firstly, a multipath-enabled data transfer connection portion (302) between the device (101, 105) and the intermediate device (103) in accordance with the multipath extension. Secondly, a basic data transfer connection portion (303) between the intermediate device (103) and the other device (102) in accordance with the basic protocol. |
