An optical sensor comprising first (5, fig. 1) and second (7, fig. 1) photoresponsive components that are each configured to fluoresce in response to excitation by light of a first wavelength and emit light including a second and a third wavelength respectively. The fluorescence of the first component varies with the oxygen concentration of a medium with which the sensor is in contact, and the fluorescence of the second component varies with the carbon dioxide concentration of a medium with which the sensor is in contact. Optionally, this optical sensor is used in conjunction with a MODS (multiple organ dysfunction syndrome) monitoring system probe 11. The probe 11 features an optical fibre 13 with a distal end which is attached to the optical sensor 1, so as to be inserted into a patient. |
