The reduction of motor torque output ripple by in a switched reluctance motor is achieved by the inclusion of one or more non-continuous flux barriers sharing a common axis running along the longitudinal axis of stator and/or rotor teeth, which axis may be skewed relative to the rotational axis of the motor (fig 9 not shown). The total combined barrier length along a longitudinal axis of any of the teeth 36,38 is between 30% and 70% of the total length of the rotor 31 and the flux barriers along the length of the flux barrier axis may be equidistantly spaced. In the case of a single non-continuous flux barrier 106,108 it may be placed axially centrally along a longitudinal axis of a tooth. The flux barrier cross section may be square, elliptical, round, rhomboid, trapezium or a combination thereof and the internal volume of the barriers may be filled with one or more of air, plastics or non-ferrous metal. The principle of a motor controller configured to vary the stator winding current to additionally influence the torque output profile and counteract driveline resonant frequency or torsional oscillation imbalance in an associated vehicle drive line is disclosed. |
