481,138. Recording sound. COX, W. P. H. Oct. 7, 1936, No. 27169. Convention date, Aug. 28. [Class 40 (ii)] A method of recording sound or like vibrations consists in submitting a pressure-sensitive photographic layer to the action of a recording member, in the form of a flattened stylus, movable in a direction perpendicular to the surface of said layer by said vibrations and serving to apply pressure to the film in magnitude depending upon the intensity of the vibrations, the stylus having an edge which, when viewed in the direction of movement of the film, is convex to said layer, Fig. 3 (not shown) or presents a V-edge to said layer, Fig. 4 (not shown), so as to produce on development a combined variable-width and variable-density record as shown in the Figure. The variations in pressure between the recording member and the pressure-sensitive layer may be brought about in various ways. Thus, the recording member may either be attached to some kind of microphonic member or soundrecording system or the film band may be pressed against the recording member by such a system. In the latter case, the pressure may be exerted by a gaseous or liquid medium which transmits the vibrations. Alternatively, the film band itself may be employed directly as the microphone membrane.
