In the present invention, there is disclosed a core assembly for a sports protective pad comprising, according to the first embodiment: a backing member (14) that includes a plurality of backing pieces (26, 28, 30) that are assembled together; and a deflection shield (12) overlaid on the backing member (14). The deflection shield (12) is located on the backing member using cooperating interlocking members provided on the deflection shield (12) and at least one of the backing pieces (26, 28, 30). According to the second, more specific embodiment, the core assembly for a sports protective pad comprises a backing member (14) having a forward facing surface (33) and a plurality of tenons (32) disposed on the forward facing surface (33); and a deflection shield overlaid on the backing member and located using cooperating holes (24) provided in the deflection shield (12) for receiving the tenons (32) of the backing member (14). The present invention also discloses a method of assembling a protective hockey goaltender leg pad comprising the steps of: a) assembling a plurality of backing pieces (26,28,30) to form a backing member (14); b) overlaying and interlocking a deflection shield (12) on the backing member (14) to form a core assembly; and c) inserting the core assembly into an outer envelope to form a protective hockey goaltender leg pad. |
