[Classes 72 and 82 (i)] Ores containing oxides, for example iron ores or manganese ores, are reduced by passing reducing gas through the ore contained in a number of reducing chambers in series while pulsating the pressure of the gas in the material, the gas being heated between successive chambers. Gas from a heater 4, Fig. 1 may be admitted tc the first of a series of reducing chambers 1 through openings 8, pulsation being obtained by means of handoperated valves 5, 7 12 and a chamber 6; or gas from a chamber 13, Fig. 3, may be admitted to a reducing chamber 17, and pulsation obtained' automatically by means of valves 15, 22 operated by a cam 23. A number of similar reducing chambers with intermediate gas heaters may be supplied from a common gas pipe, pulsation being effected by any suitable means, and valves being arranged to shunt the gas around a chamber being emptied and charged.</p> |
