[Classes 2 (iii) and 15 (ii)] Monoazo dyes are produced in substance or on the fibre by coupling a diazotized 4-aminophenyl alkyl sulphone, substituted in the nucleus by one or more alkyl, alkyloxy, aryl or aryloxy groups, with an arylamide of a polynuclear o-hydroxycarboxylic acid. The nuclei may be further substituted, e.g. by benzoylamino or by halogen. The coupling of a diazotized p-aminophenyl alkyl monosulphone with Naphthol AS/OL (cf. Specification 546,281) is excluded. Examples relate to the production on cotton yarn of the dyestuffs, (1) 4-amino-3- methylphenyl ethyl sulphone # Naphthol AS/TR ; (2) and (3) 4-amino-3-methoxyphenyl butyl sulphone # Naphthol AS/E and Naphthol AS/TR respectively ; (4) 4-amino-3- ethoxy-6-chlorophenyl hexyl sulphone # Naphthol AS/OL; (5) and (6) 4-amino-3-methoxyphenyl hexyl sulphone # Naphthol AS/TR and Naphthol AS/LB respectively; (7) and (8) 4-amino-3-ethoxy-6-chlorophenyl hexyl sulphone and 4-amino-3-ethoxyphenyl propyl sulphone respectively # Naphthol AS/LB ; (9) 4-amino-3-(41-methoxy) phenoxyphenyl butyl sulphone # Naphthol AS/ITR; (10) 4- amino-3-(41-ethoxy) phenyl ethyl sulphone # Naphthol AS/LT. The first Provisional Specification contains also an example of the coupling 4-amino-3-methoxyphenyl methyl or ethyl sulphone # Naphthol AS/E and the second Provisional Specification of the couplings 3- methoxy-4-amino-6-chlorophenyl hexyl or butyl sulphone - Naphthol AS/LB.
