481,690. Making glass fibres. EDWARDS, A. E. (Naamlooze Vennootschap Maatschappij tot Beheer en Exploitatie van Octrooien) Feb. 8, 1937, No. 3695. [Class 56] In the manufacture of fibres by subjecting a stream of molten glass to a blast of steam or other gas, cooling of the stream before it is acted on by the blast is prevented. For example, the stream may pass through a heating chamber 15 on its way to the blast nozzle 20 or the blast may consist of burning gases. A cup 26 may be provided to give a back pressure for supporting the emerging strearn. In other cases, the blower is arranged against the bottom of the boot or close to it, the entry of atmospheric air into the blast being prevented. The floor of the boot may be provided with a refractory bushing formed to cause the glass to emerge in a number of separate streams, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown). In a further modification the glass is allowed to emerge in separate streams by an adjustable plug 13<1> having a central passage down which air, steam &c., may be blown to convert the streams into fibres with or without a co-operating blower and heating means as shown in Fig. 4. Specilication 428,720 is referred to.
