An electronic device for generating ozone is deployed within standard, perforated, plastic or cardboard distribution trays of fresh fruit or vegetables. The ozone disables ethylene and destroys airborne and surface contaminating microbial organisms, thus extending the life of the produce. The electronic unit is sized such that it sits within individual palletised trays of produce and may have dimensions of 100m x 60mm x 30mm. Ozone is supplied to the immediate local atmosphere and ensures that adequate ozone reaches all of the produce when packed in shipping containers. The ozone generating unit is portable and preferably battery-powered. It comprises a rigid polymer casing enclosing an electronic unit with discharge needle assembly and grid, which generates and passes both anions and ozone, at predetermined, controlled levels. |
