In a case where a user views an image of a remote location, the present invention achieves, by a simple structure, a visual effect as if the user is present at the location. This image display system, which is for a user located in a first space to view an image in a second space remote from the first space, receives image data, from the imaging device, representing an image captured by an imaging device installed in the second space, and displays, on a display screen formed by a display screen forming unit installed in the first space, a partial image that has a display size in accordance with the size of the display screen in the image represented by the received image data. In addition, a detecting unit detects at least one among the position and direction of a face, the line of sight, and the position of a user located in the first space. Still further, while the partial image is being displayed on the display screen, when there is a change in the result detected by the detecting unit, a determination is made regarding which partial image in the image represented by the image data is to be displayed on the display screen on the basis of the detected result after the change.
