This method 1 for manufacturing a honeycomb structure comprises: a forming step S1 of forming a square rod-shaped honeycomb article; a firing step S2 of firing the honeycomb article and forming a square rod-shaped honeycomb fired body; an applying step S3 of applying a paste-like binder on the side surface of at least a portion of the honeycomb fired body; a honeycomb block body fabricating step S4 of binding while pressurizing a plurality of honeycomb fired bodies to fabricate a honeycomb block body; and a periphery grinding step S7 of grinding the peripheral surface of the honeycomb block body and obtaining a honeycomb structure. In the honeycomb block body fabricating step S4, binding is performed without having any member other than the binder between the honeycomb fired bodies, and the binder has shear-thinning properties.
