Provided is a device that sends a usage state to an information processing apparatus with which the device can communicate via a network. The device includes: a function providing means for providing predetermined functions; a communication means for sending the usage state to the information processing apparatus; a determining means for determining whether the communication means has successfully sent the usage state to the information processing apparatus; and a function restricting means for restricting, at least partially, the functions provided by the function providing means in a case where the determining means has determined that the communication means cannot send the usage state to the information processing apparatus.
