PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device that suppresses blown out highlights.SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device includes at least a first polarizing film, a first retardation layer that is optically biaxial, a second retardation layer, a liquid crystal layer, a third retardation layer that is optically biaxial, and a second polarizing film, in this order. The liquid crystal layer has a VA mode with 4 domains or less and has a &Dgr;nd of 250 to 450 nm; Re(550) and Rth(550) of the first to third retardation layers are within predetermined ranges; an angle formed by the slow axis of the first retardation layer and the absorption axis of the first polarizing film is 45°; the slow axis of the first retardation layer is parallel to the in-plane slow axis of the liquid crystal layer during application of a voltage; the slow axis of the first retardation layer is orthogonal to the slow axis of the third retardation layer; and the difference between an absolute value of Rth(550) in the first retardation layer and an absolute value of Rth(550) in the third retardation layer is 10 nm or less. |
