[Class 83 (iii)] A tool-holding assembly for lathes, planers, shapers &c. comprises a tool-holder 12, Fig. 1, pivotally mounted on a body 1 and connected thereto by a spring 23 so that the tool can yield if it engages the work with excessive pressure. The body is bored at 2, Fig. 2, to receive the pivot pin of the tool-holder 12. The end of the tool-holder is recessed at 18, the lower face 19 of the recess being convex. An adjustable block 21 mounted in the recess has a convex lower face and one end of a laminated spring 23 is clamped between the convex faces by bolts 24, Fig. 1. The other end of the spring is clamped in a corresponding recess in the body, packing being inserted as required at 26, Fig. 1, and clamping effected by screws 25. A retaining plate 27 may also be provided. The degree of resilience may be varied by changing the number of spring laminations and the height of the tool may be adjusted by placing the packing 26 above or below the springs. The front of the tool-holder has a tool-receiving slot 29, Fig. 6, coacting with a slot 32 in a clamping plate 31 to secure the tool 30. A keeper plate 35 maintans the front of the tool-holder in contact with the body but allows the yielding movement of the tool-holder. In a modification, Fig. 9, the tool-clamping plate is recessed on one side 44 and ribbed on the other 45, so that by reversing the plate tools of different thicknesses may be clamped. The clamping plate may also be modified according to the section of the tool. |
