The apparatus has an application nozzle (1) for applying adhesive to a book block spine (4). The application nozzle is line-connected to an adhesive supplying system. The application nozzle comprises a chamber (10) for providing adhesive and arranged adjacent to the nozzle opening, and another chamber (12) is arranged between a nozzle opening (3) and the supplying system. A slide (6) is arranged in a region of the former chamber for changing width (8) of the chamber, and another slide (11) is arranged in a region of another chamber for changing the volume (21) of the latter chamber. An independent claim is also included for a method for adapting an adhesive application nozzle.
