The invention relates to a method for operating a portable hard-surface suction cleaner for extracting a liquid/air mixture from a hard surface using suction, wherein the hard-surface suction cleaner has a suction nozzle, a suction subassembly and a separating device, which is arranged in the flow path between the suction nozzle and the suction subassembly and is connected to a dirty-liquid tank, and wherein the suction subassembly can be switched on and off by a control device and can be supplied with energy by at least one rechargeable battery. In order to develop the method such that the energy consumption of the hard-surface suction cleaner can be reduced, it is proposed according to the invention that the control device is provided with a sensor means and the suction subassembly is switched on automatically by way of the sensor means. Also proposed is a portable hard-surface suction cleaner (10; 110) for implementing the method.
