PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarizing element, which is excellent in heat resistance and light resistance and capable of maintaining transmittance and extinction ratio characteristics even in a simple configuration, and which has low reflectance and enlarges an allowable incident angle.SOLUTION: A polarizing element includes a metal structure layer 6 comprising island-like metal structures 12 stretched in one direction and two-dimensionally arranged, formed on an upper surface of a transparent first support; and the metal structure layer 6 is coated with a transparent second support 8. Each island-like metal structure has a wide part and a narrow part. Light incident to the metal structure layer 6 side exits to the outside of the polarizing element as superposed light including a component of the light reflected by the metal structure layer 6, a component of the light once transmitting through the metal structure layer 6, reflected by a metal thin line structure layer 10 and then again transmitting through the metal structure layer 6, and a component of the light by multipath reflection. |
