[Class 2 (iii)] The process of Specification 546,301 for the production of certain nuclear substituted benzenesulphonyl chlorides is extended to the production of the corresponding bromides by using bromine or a substance yielding bromine in place of chlorine. According to the example, p-acetylaminobenzenesulphonyl bromide is prepared by adding bromine to a suspension of 4:41-diacetylaminodiphenyldisulphide in acetic acid ; the product reacts with primary and secondary amines, e.g. diethylamine, to give sulphonamides. The Provisional Specification refers to the use of other halogens than chlorine, mentioning fluorine as well as bromine, and states that it is not always necessary to protect a nuclear amino group.
