An RF power combining arrangement comprises a power combiner 3 having at least four ports; a first match-dependent oscillator 1 arranged to supply power at a first frequency to a first input port of the combiner 3; a second match-dependent oscillator 2, arranged to supply power at a second frequency to a second input port of the combiner 3; and a mismatch 4 connected to a third port of the combiner 3. The oscillators may be magnetrons or Gunn diodes. The power combiner combines power from the first and second oscillators and, when the first and second frequencies are different, applies a fraction of the combined power to the mismatch. The mismatch reflects at least some of the fraction to the first and second oscillators to lock their outputs in frequency and phase. The fourth port of the power combiner is arranged to receive the combined output power. The arrangement may include several power combiners connected in series, in parallel, or in series/parallel arrangements (figs. 3-5). The invention is suitable for combining the outputs of magnetrons for material processing applications or for linear accelerators (lineacs). |
