[Class 82 (ii)] In the flotation separation and classification of particles, a stream of bubbles, preferably of air, is supplied by a jet through a shallow dense layer of the material to be treated at the bottom of a bath of liquid and are guided by an inclined surface extending towards the surface of the bath, two or more other surfaces below and near the first surface separately catching particles partially lifted and those particles carried by the bubbles until they burst. In one form of apparatus, Figs. 2. 3, the pulpy material to be treated is fed by a hopper 11 into the bottom of a groove 12 along which it is caused to flow by the action of a rotating cylinder 13 provided with ribs 14. Air is supplied through jets 16 under a layer of material covered with a loose pad and fed from a manifold in which a constant pressure is maintained. The rising bubbles are guided by an inclined surface 22 and break near the surface of the liquid, the lifted material falling on to a surface 23 by which it is guided and discharged into a hopper not shown. Material partially lifted falls upon a surface 24 provided with ridges 27 and is guided back into the groove 12 for further treatment, or if desired some of this material may be collected by a surface 25 provided with a curved portion 26. The space between the guiding surface may be divided into compartments by divisions 28, and the chambers formed by the guiding surface may be closed by ends 29 fitted to the groove 13 at 30. In a second form the baffle plates may be placed across the groove instead of along them. In another form the apparatus comprises a tube with an open lower constructed end containing a compressed fibrous pad gently pressed into the end and in which the material is placed. One side of the tube forms an inclined surface up which the bubbles rise to the top of the liquid and the released particles fall down the other side of the tube and are entrained in a side tube.
