Provided is an active material for a battery, which can exhibit high capacity and can provide a nonaqueous battery having excellent high-current properties. According to one embodiment, the active material for a battery comprises a niobium complex oxide. The niobium complex oxide represented by chemical formula Li_xM_(1-y)Nb_yNb_2O_(7+), wherein M is at least one type selected from the group consisting of Ti and Zr; x is greater than or equal to 0 and less than or equal to 6; y is greater than or equal to 0 and less than or equal to 1; and greater than or equal to -1 and less than or equal to 1. The niobium complex oxide includes 0.01-3.02 mass% of a nitrogen atom.
