SELF-SEALING FIXING ELEMENT

A self-sealing fixing element comprising a body with a bearing surface, and a bore with an opening in the bearing surface. A curable sealant layer (40) is carried by the bearing surface and encircles the opening in the bearing surface. The curable sealant layer (40) is formed from a sealant material which cures when exposed to atmosphere. A barrier layer (41) overlays the curable sealant layer (40) and can break apart when the fixing element is installed in order to expose the sealant layer to atmosphere. The curable sealant layer (40) has a thickness which decreases away from the bore, and the barrier layer (41) has a thickness which increases away from the bore. A self-sealing fixing element comprising a body with a bearing surface, and a bore with an opening in the bearing surface. The element has a fitting comprising a washer which contacts the bearing surface and encircles the opening in the bearing surface. The washer is formed of an insulating material which electrically isolates the bearing surface. A deformable sealing flange protrudes into the bore from an inner diameter of the washer. The sealing flange is formed of a deformable material which can deform to form a seal.
