[Class 74 (ii)] A purl fabric has wrap stitches es and transferred loops tl directly associated. Sinker loops may be transferred to form pelerine effects within the wrap thread effects. Single loops may be transferred or, as shown, an accumulation of a number of loops may be transferred to the adjacent needle or needles. The wrap stitches may be made to appear either on the front or the rear of the fabric, and to avoid long floats where the wrap.stitch effects are not required, the wrap threads t may be caught in the fabric without knitting. Tuck, missstitch and racked rib effects may be added. The wrap thread guides and pelerine instruments may be shogged with respect to the needles so that the wrap and pelerine effects may be combined in different wales. The fabric can be made on a single or multifeeder circular machine, or upon a flat or straight-bar machine, and garment lengths or articles can be produced in string formation with separating courses or draw threads. The patterned areas are formed in the non-ribbed courses, and these courses may be knitted slacker than the rib courses, as described in Specification 391,212. A double-cylinder machine having wrap thread guides 7 and pelerine instruments 8 arranged in tricks in a dial 17 within the cylinders is described. Jacks 12 having patterning butts 12a selected by pattern-controlled cams 13, 14 as described in Specification 543,097 may be provided for operating the guides 7 and instruments 8 or the patterning butts may be formed upon the guides and instruments. The thread-presenting ends 7b of the guides 7.and the thread-engaging ends 8b of the instruments 8 are laterally offset. The pelerine instruments may be arranged in pairs to spread a loop or loops laterally in opposite directions for transfer to adjacent needles. The dial 17 may be shogged with respect to the cylinders, and one cylinder may be shogged with respect to the other. The guides 7 and instruments 8 may be arranged in separate tricks, or a guide and an instrument may be mounted side by side or upon one another in a single trick.
