The present invention relates to a washing machine and a method for controlling the washing machine, which can economize on energy upon steam washing. According to the present invention, provided is the method for controlling a washing machine, the method comprising: a water supply step of supplying washing water, with which washing detergent has been mixed, to a tub, and rotating a drum in a first motion; a temporal spin-dry step of discharging the washing water from the tub while rotating the drum so that fabric is rotated in a state of being stuck to the drum; and a steam washing step of supplying steam into the drum while rotating the drum in a second motion; wherein the first motion is a rotation motion at a rotation speed, corresponding to centrifugal force equal to or higher than 1 G, in at least a predetermined rotation period, which is performed while the drum is making a single rotation, and the second motion is a rotation motion at a rotation speed, corresponding to centrifugal force equal to or lower than 1 G, which is performed while the drum is making a single rotation. |
