[Class 142 (iv)] [Also in Groups VIII and XIV] Shock-absorbing or cushioning material, e.g. for use in the manufacture of seating, or as a mattress or mattress component comprises two or more units each consisting of two textile fabrics spaced apart and connected by resiliently flexible textile elements or legs which are woven in the two fabrics. The connecting legs are of such length and are so arranged as normally to hold the two fabrics spaced apart by at least one-twelfth of an inch. The units are either secured together by adhesive, stitching or other positive fastening means or are held together by encircling or encasing means. The units may be produced upon a loom for weaving a warp pile fabric, ground warps 1, 2 and wefts 5 forming one fabric, and other warps 3, 4 and wefts 6 forming the second fabric, and a pile yarn 7 engaging wefts in both the fabrics. The pile yarn 7 may, as shown engage all the wefts in both fabrics, or may engage alternate wefts in each fabric. Alternatively two sets of pile warps may be employed. The pile yarn 7 may be of mohair and the spacing of the fabrics may be from .1 to .4 inches. Alternatively wool, cotton, kapok, glass asbestos, metal or rayon fibres may be employed and the fibres may be impregnated with synthetic resin to impart or increase the resilient flexibility. The pile yarns may be disposed in strips. The fibres or the unit may be treated to obtain a fireresisting or water-repelling quality.</p> |
