An image reading apparatus (207, fig 5), such as a copying machine, image scanner or multifunction printer; wherein the apparatus has an illumination device 50 configured to illuminate an original (203, fig 4), and a solid-state image sensor (206, fig 4) configured to receive reflected light from the original. The illumination device has a plurality of light emitting elements 100, such as LEDs; and a light guide 102 to guide light emitted from the LEDs toward the original. The light guide includes a deflection or reflection surface 105; and an emission surface 106 to emit the light deflected by the deflection surface toward the original. The deflection and emission surfaces each have a plurality of first 110a and second 111a curved optical surfaces respectively provided side by side in a longitudinal direction of the light guide, where the curved surfaces may for example be convex or concave toric surfaces. The first and second curved portions may have different pitches, and the emission surface may be provided with a surface texturing or fine pattern to improve the uniformity of illuminance provided to the original. |
