The present invention relates to an apparatus for protecting a reactor structure from core melt generated in a reactor, and specifically, to a thermal insulator installed outside a reactor pressure vessel. The reactor thermal insulator may include: a thermal insulator body which is spaced apart from a side surface of the reactor pressure vessel by a predetermined interval to enclose the side surface of the reactor pressure vessel, and has a tapered shape at the lower portion thereof; and a fusible plug installed on the bottom surface of the thermal insulator body to store core melt generated in the reactor pressure vessel, wherein the core melt generated from the side surface of the reactor pressure vessel may be guided downwardly to be discharged. According to the present invention, there is an advantage that thermal damage to a reactor structure caused by damage to the side surface of a reactor pressure vessel can be prevented, and a core catcher with a decreased cross-sectional area can be installed by increasing a predictability of storage by guiding core melt downwardly. In addition, there is another advantage that a thermal load at the core catcher can be reduced by delaying a time taken for the core melt to arrive at the core catcher, and the number of discharges of the core melt from the reactor pressure vessel to a reactor cavity is decreased thereby reducing a risk of steam explosion of the reactor structure caused by multiple discharges. |
