摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To compatibly attain the avoidance of preignition and quick start when automatically starting a spark ignition type multi-cylinder engine.SOLUTION: When automatically starting an engine 1 automatically stopped under predetermined conditions while establishing predetermined conditions, automatically starting means (an engine controller 100) controls at least a fuel injection valve 53, an ignition plug 51, and a valve phase varying mechanism 32. When a hydraulic pressure to be supplied is not higher than a predetermined value, the valve phase varying mechanism locks a valve closing timing for an intake valve to a predetermined timing. The predetermined timing is set to be a timing when the valve closing timing for the intake valve, defined at a time of 1 mm lift, is on the side of a top dead center beyond a midway point in a compression stroke and when an actual valve closing timing is on the side of a bottom dead center beyond the midway point in the compression stroke along with sinking due to no supply of oil to a hydraulic lash adjuster 303.
