A vacuum coater for coating a web with a succession of a metal oxide and a metal; said vacuum coater comprises a vacuum deposition region with a deposition source and a drum; said web extending, when the coater is in use, about at least part of the circumference of said drum to allow a succession of a metal oxide layer and a metal layer to be deposited on said surface; wherein the coater further comprises an oxygen injector positioned in close proximity to the web's entrance to the vacuum deposition region; whereby the web is only exposed to oxygen sufficiently to oxygenate the surface of the web to form a layer of metal oxide; said layer of metal oxide being exposed to further evaporated metal which deposits over said metal oxide layer to form an outermost opaque layer of deposited metal. |
