A hydraulic system 20 for supplying fluid to an actuator 26 is provided. The system 20 comprises a variable speed prime mover 28 drivingly coupled to a variable displacement hydraulic pump 30. The system 20 is configured to deliver hydraulic fluid via fluid conduits 31 to the actuator 26. It may deliver hydraulic fluid to the actuator 26 at a first hydraulic pressure at a first rate of pressure rise; and at a second hydraulic pressure at a second rate of pressure rise. The first hydraulic pressure may be greater than the second hydraulic pressure; and the first hydraulic rate of pressure rise may be lower than the second hydraulic rate of pressure rise. The actuator 26 may be operable to move a control surface 24 of a vessel. A method of operating such a vessel is also disclosed. |
