PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element achieving both functions of a mirror and a display element.SOLUTION: A liquid crystal display element 1 is constituted by stacking a backlight 2, an R (rear) polarizing plate 3, a liquid crystal panel 4, an F (front) polarizing plate 5, a reflective polarizing plate 6 and a retardation plate 7, in this order. The liquid crystal panel 4 is configured to include a liquid crystal which is vertically aligned and has negative dielectric anisotropy and which is tilted in a tilt direction at an angle of 35° to 55° with respect to the horizontal direction by application of a voltage. The F polarizing plate 5 has a transmission axis set in a direction at an angle of 35° to 55° with respect to the tilt direction of the liquid crystal. The R polarizing plate 3 is arranged, with respect to the F polarizing plate 5, to render the transmission axes of the plates into orthogonal to each other. The reflective polarizing plate 6 has a transmission axis set to be parallel to the direction of the transmission axis of the F polarizing plate 5. The retardation plate 7 is a quarter-wave plate having a stretching axis set in a direction at an angle of 35° to 55° with respect to the direction of the transmission axis of the reflective polarizing plate 6. |
