484,110. Guided skip hoists; delivering material from hoppers. BIRTLEY CO., Ltd., and MUIR, W. I. Oct. 31, 1936, No. 29670. [Classes 78 (i) and 78 (iii)] A pair of air-seal doors 4, 5 at the inlet and outlet of the discharge hopper 3 of an upcast mine shaft are operated mechanically and positively by the skip 2, each by way of a separate system of links and levers. The door 5 is connected by links 12, 15 and levers 14, 16 with a pair of pivoted arms 13 and 11a projecting into the shaft, and the door 4 similarly with another pair of arms 18a and 7a. As the loaded skip arrives at the top of the shaft a ramp 6 thereon actuates the arms 11a and 7a. in turn to close the door 5 and open the door 4 for the reception of the coal. As the empty skip descends the ramp (i actuates the arms 18a and 13 in turn to reclose the door 4 and open the door 5 so that the contents of the hopper are discharged. The hopper remains closed against the passage of air throughout by one or other of the doors. A weighted arm 32 biasses the door 5 to its end positions. A self-locking catch holds the door 5 closed and is released before opening of the door by a lost-motion connection between the door and its operating link 15. In order to equalize the pressure between the shaft 1 and hopper 3 prior to opening the door 4, openings along the upper edge of the door are first uncovered by pilot doors 19 fast on the supporting shaft of the door, the door itself having a lost-motion driving connection with the shaft. |
