An electrical generating apparatus for a road vehicle having first and second DC electrical systems, each respectively comprising first and second DC circuits 29,33 and first and second batteries 27,31 for providing first and second voltages, the first voltage being at least twice the second voltage, comprises an electrical machine 35 operable in first and second modes to generate electricity at either voltage and a switch 37 for connecting the electric machine 35 to either DC electrical system for providing power to the respective DC circuits 29,33 and/or charging the respective batteries 27,31. The apparatus may be an electric starter and/or traction motor for the road vehicle. The switch 37 may have a third state in which the electric machine is not directly connected to either DC system but is connected via a resistance to a voltage source, allowing a capacitance of the electric machine 35 to be charged or discharged to either voltage (figures 8-10). The electric machine 35 may be a switched reluctance machine. A DC-DC converter may be connected to both DC systems in parallel with the switch 37 and electrical machine 35 and may allow voltage conversion between the DC systems. |
