561,621. Supporting and propelling aircraft. REINMANN, M. A. Sept. 25, 1941, No. 12460. [Class 4] Air is taken from above the wings of an aeroplane, compressed and beneath them in jets directed substantially towards the wing tips by air pumps, fans or compressors to give lift independently of any forward motion. The intake may be forwardly directed to assist propulsion. Fig. 1 shows on the two sides of the aircraft different forms of blower working in casings beneath the wings. A forwardly directed inlet 7 having a V-shaped front end with perforations admits air to a blower comprising blades 6 working in a casing 3 having an opening directed towards the wing tip. In the form shown on the left, an inner casing 9 is provided having one opening of the same width as the opening in the casing 3 and two smaller openings 11, which, by turning the casing 9, can be brought opposite the opening in the outer casing. In this case the blades 6 have extensions 12 long enough to cover any but the widest of the openings so as to give an intermediate blast. In both forms, adjustable vanes 10 are provided at the openings in the main casings to vary the direction of delivery.
