A tipper comprises a tipper body pivotable on a frame and lifted by a hydraulic ram cylinder. When the tipper is used on uneven ground the ram may not be vertical so the vehicle may topple or the hydraulic cylinder ram may bend or buckle (fig 3). Sensors 42, 44, 46 associated with the hydraulic ram indicate the lateral state of the hydraulic cylinder. Inclination sensors 42 measure the tilt of the ram cylinder (fore-aft and laterally) and bending sensors 44, 46 can measure lateral bending, each feeding into a lateral condition determining module 50 continuously monitoring the lateral condition of the hydraulic ram cylinder . An alert is generated when lateral condition of the hydraulic cylinder is outside acceptable limits in the form of visual display 54 or audio signals. The bending and inclination sensors 42, 44, 46 can be mounted directly to the ram cylinder to measure the lateral inclination in a plane perpendicular to the rams pivot axis, or to measure the fore-aft inclination in a plane parallel to the rams pivot axis. |
