An automated storage/retrieval system is provided that comprises first and second multi-tier racks that have multi-tier shelves and are arranged parallel to each other, a transferring shuttle that can run horizontally between these multi-tier racks to store a load onto or retrieve a load from a shelf, and an elevator to move the transferring shuttle to another tier. The elevator includes a mast disposed adjacent to each of the multi-tier racks; a shuttle elevating platform that can move upward and downward at the inner side of the mast, the elevating platform being for moving a transferring shuttle upward and downward; and a load elevating platform that can move upward and downward at the outer side of the mast, the load elevating platform being for moving a load upward and downward. When the shuttle elevating platform is in alignment with the load elevating platform, the transferring shuttle on the shuttle elevating platform can deliver a load onto or receive a load from the load elevating platform, enabling the load to be handled during the lifting movement of the transferring shuttle without the need to have a load wait, which in turn realizes a high throughput performance. |
