Method for operating a combustion engine

The method involves changing a closing time point of inlet valves (22) of an internal combustion engine by an external exhaust gas recirculation. A current lambda value is greater than a desired target lambda value in an operational state of the burning engine. A portion of the external exhaust gas return is increased for lowering the current lambda value. The closing time point of the inlet valve is delayed until the target lambda value is reached for again lowering the current lambda value.
