A vehicle system includes a processing device and a sensor, which may be mounted on a steel bumper, that outputs an impact signal. The processing device is programmed to calculate an acceleration envelope from the impact signal, determine a number of times the impact signal crosses a predetermined threshold, for example a number of zero crossings in a time interval, and determine whether the impact signal represents a pedestrian impact, based in part on the acceleration envelope and the number of times the impact signal crosses the predetermined threshold; this may be used to deploy a pedestrian protection countermeasure if a pedestrian impact is determined, or a different countermeasure if a non-pedestrian impact (such as the impact of a small animal) is determined. The acceleration envelope may be determined using a different time duration than the number of zero crossings. |
