A method of three dimensional printing a virtual environment which comprises the steps of a) obtaining a plurality of complementary images of the environment from respective different viewpoints, s10: b) calculating a 3D surface geometry of at least some of the environment depicted in the plurality of complementary images, s20: c) modifying a property of the 3D surface geometry to form a 3D model, s30: d) outputting the 3D model to a 3D printer, s40. The method may further involve obtaining the position and direction of view of the virtual cameras used to capture the respective images and using depth and/or silhouette information to calculate the surface geometry from the obtained images. The surface geometry of the 3D model may be modified to make it suitable for 3D printing. This could involve generating supplementary geometry (i.e. support structures) to support disconnected components of the 3D model or thickening parts of the 3D model that are not thick enough to support themselves when printed. The method may be used to generate a real object of, for example, a virtual character created in a virtual world. |
