A means for operating a railway vehicle on a network of tracks forming one or more vehicle routes. Vehicle status information 20 including present track location, information regarding the route to be taken by the vehicle, and an operation profile 20 relating vehicle operational recommendations and/or requirements to track locations and routes is collected. A determination of operational risk is calculated (18, fig 2) in relation to the status 20, route and profile information 20 where the operational risk is the likelihood of future vehicle operation departing from the operation profile information 20 at a given section of track or a given location on the route. Advisory notices 9 are generated for a driver of the vehicle on the basis of operational risk where each advisory notice 9, when acted on by the driver, leads to a reduction in the likelihood of future vehicle operation departing from the operation profile information 20. |
