PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a submicron size rare earth oxide powder free from aggregation and excellent in monodispersity.SOLUTION: The method for producing a submicron size rare earth oxide powder includes: a step of adding an anionic surfactant containing a salt of a 6-20C saturated or unsaturated aliphatic acid to an aqueous solution containing rare earth metal ions, and preparing a water-in-oil droplet (W/O) type emulsion solution by mixing a hydrophobic organic solvent with the aqueous solution to which the anionic surfactant is added; a step of precipitating a rare earth oxide precursor by adding a precipitant to the emulsion solution; and a step of separating a precipitate of the rare earth oxide precursor from the solution, and drying and firing the separated precipitate to obtain the rare earth oxide powder having an average particle diameter of 10 nm to 1 μm. |
