[Class 135] [Also in Groups XXVIII and XXXIII] In an explosion pump which may be used for jet propulsion on ships or may drive a turbine, water enters the chamber 15 through a wide automatic valve 17 and is driven out through the narrow outlet 14 by explosions in a chamber 20 forming the upper part of the chamber 15, electromagnetically-controlled valves 21, 22, 23 serving to admit air and fuel into the chamber 20 and to exhaust the spent gases. The Figure shows a device adapted for a ship, and the chamber 15 is situated below the waterline. In operation, an explosion drives out the water in chamber 20 so breaking a circuit to an electromagnet 37, which circuit included a second through the water between a metal plate 30 and the chamber 20, and releasing a change-over switch 38 so that this assumes the position shown and prepares the circuit to an electromagnet 58, which circuit is still open at the spark gap 46, 49. When fall in pressure is sufficient, water enters chamber 15 through valve 17, which is connected with sparking contact 49 through a friction clutch arrangement and the movement of the valve 17 closes contacts 46, 49 thereby energizing magnet 58 which opens exhaust valve 22 and air inlet valve 21 admitting a fresh supply of air to chamber 20. The water rising,' then bridges plate 30 and chamber 20, energizing magnet 37 and operating switch 38 so that magnet 58 is de-energized, closing air and exhaust valves, and magnet 59 is energized, momentarily opening fuel valve 23 and admitting a charge of vaporized fuel into the chamber 20. The up-rush of water then recoils causing an opening of contacts 46, 49 and a spark between them. The cycle then recommences. Fig. 4 shows the electromagneticallyoperated fuel valves 23. On energization of the magnet 59, the lever 66 which rests on an adjustable stop 73 engages and then releases an arm 67 so that valve 23 is momentarily actuated. In a modification, Figs. 7-9 (not shown), two pumps are arranged side by side and work alternately so as to produce a continuous stream of water which operates a turbine, the two water inlet valves being coupled together. |
