An electric battery plate separator is made by mixing a synthetic resinoid with a finely divided substance which is subsequently removed, and which on removal leaves a mass having the desired porosity. Starch is the preferred substance and water may be added to swell the starch grains while the mixture is being made. In addition, finely divided cotton, wood, kieselguhr or bentonite may be added. Specified resinoids are polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene and a phenol-formaldehyde condensation product. Instead of starch, Glauber salts, sugar or common salt may be used. The starch may be removed by acid, alkali or diastase. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 481,871. |
