Method for determining the physical state of a particle filter

The method involves calculating reaction speeds of soot combustion reactions (24) by using an instantaneous temperature of a particle filter and material quantity for different chemical species present in the filter. Theoretical consumed material quantity is predicted for the species using the speeds, and compared (28) with the material quantity present in the filter. The speeds are corrected (30) when the theoretical quantity for one of the species is greater than the filter material quantity for the species. Filter state characterizing parameters are determined using the corrected speeds. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) an engine controlling method (2) a vehicle comprising an exhaust line.
