In a soft flexible sheet comprising a web of carded fibres united to each other only at localised points by a binder contacting and bonding substantially each of the fibres of said web at at least one point, the fibres being unbonded throughout the rest of their length, the binder comprises an emulsion of polyvinyl acetate and a water-insoluble plasticizer compatible with polyvinyl acetate and a pigmented or non-pigmented filler. Preferably, the plasticizer amounts to 40-60 per cent by weight of the polyvinyl acetate emulsion. In an example, dibutyl phthalate, a commercial sodium alginate preparation and a pigment-containing filler are added to a polyvinyl acetate emulsion to provide a binder which is applied to a web in the manner described in Specification 468,529, [Group VIII]. The pigment-containing filler contains water, Darvan (a wetting agent), casein, ammonia, titanium dioxide and a pigment "G.D." blue. If desired, the pigment may be omitted to give a white emulsion. Locust bean gum may be used as a thickener in place of the sodium alginate. |
