Bodies comprising fusible polyethylene having a molecular weight above 6000 are autogenously welded by bringing the bodies into contact and applying a flame to contiguous surfaces thereof. Examples describe (1) wrapping cigarettes with a sheet of fusible polyethylene and sealing the joints across the ends and on the overlapping edges by holding the edges together and touching them with the tip of a small flame; (3) two sheets made from 90 per cent fusible polyethylene and 10 per cent polyisobutylene are laid together and their contiguous edges similarly sealed together; (4) the open end of an injection-moulded tube of fusible polyethylene filled with toothpaste is sealed by applying a fine-tipped flame to the edges. |
